Loss and Restoration
The Holy Priesthood was lost.
Since the beginning, God has given priesthood authority, sacred covenants, and holy scripture to His people; and throughout history, these gifts have often been neglected, corrupted, or lost when men turned from Him. Ancient Israel received the law, the prophets, the covenants, and the oracles of God, yet many times fell into disobedience and spiritual blindness. In the early Christian era, authority and sacred tradition were preserved among the Catholics, but over time much of the purity, order, and original power of Christ’s Church became obscured. The Protestant Reformers later rose up in rebellion against corruption, and through them came great blessings, including the King James Version of the Holy Bible; yet Protestantism also became divided, incomplete, and separated from the fullness of priesthood authority. In 1830, the Lord again brought forth priesthood authority and additional scripture through the LDS restoration movement, but that work also quickly became entangled with error, pride, and disobedience. Even the name of Jesus Christ was, for a time, removed from the church that claimed to bear His authority. The pattern is sobering but clear: God gives light, authority, scripture, and covenant; mankind is tested by those gifts; and when people fall away, the Lord in His mercy continues to call His children back to the fullness of truth through Jesus Christ.
